The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system and is composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and approximately 900 islands. The reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia.

The reef can actually be seen from space and is the world’s largest structure made by living organisms. The structure of the reef plays host to a wide variety of life and has been named one of the ‘seven natural wonders of the world'.

Thirty species of whales, dolphins, and porpoises have been found in the Great Barrier Reef, with more than 1,500 fish species recorded. Six species of sea turtles come to the reef to breed (Yes it’s the big ones from the film ‘Finding Nemo’). Around 215 species of birds, 125 species of shark, stingray, skates or chimaera and even a few salt water crocodiles.

The area is known to and used by the Aboriginal Australian and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It is a very important part of local groups' cultures and spirituality. The reef is hugely popular destination for tourists especially in the Whitsunday Islands and Cairns regions.

Many boat tours and cruises are offered, from single day trips, to longer voyages. Glass-bottomed boats are very popular, and helicopter flights for stunning scenic views can also be arranged.
