Koh Lanta Diving

Koh Lanta nestles off the west coast of Thailand’s Krabi province in the Andaman Sea, between the mainland and Phi Phi Island. There are nine beaches running north/south along the 30 km island, which is six km wide.  Typical of the region, it offers the coral-rimmed beaches flanked by rugged, tree-covered hills and mangroves – one of among 70-plus small islands in these waters.

Although close to the 2004 tsunami, Koh Lanta was not badly affected and has quietly been recovering, with its hotels now operating normally.  Neither was there any damage to its natural resources, with the beaches and dive sites remaining as beautiful as ever – in fact, the water is cleaner and clearer than before the disaster.
The Andaman Sea was named as the best area for diving in southern Thailand, with two of the best individual sites being Hin Daeng and Hin Muang – top 10 rated International Dive Magazine  - with the diving base being Koh Lanta. In fact, the island is excellent for quality dive time, with easy access to many popular dive sites, including Koh Ha’s underwater carverns, Shark Point, King Cruiser Wreck, Anemone Reef, Hin Bida and Koh Bida.
If scuba diving is not for you, Ko Lanta offers a range of day trips to stunning remote islands with spectacular shallow coral reefs, recommended for novice and experienced divers and snorkellers. Ko Lanta itself offers a few snorkeling opportunities – it is the nearby islands that offer the real opportunities for an amazing aquatic experiences.
For example, Ko Mook and Ko Waen are two tiny limestone islands off the south end of Ko Lanta. Although the tides can be strong, around the bottom of the cliff-face is a reef with plenty of soft and hard corals and large schools of fish and other sea life. But probably the best snorkelling spot is Ko Rok: a square mile of coral reef with white powder sands and crystal clear sea – including superb visibility to a depth of 30 m.
