OTHER UNDERSEA EXPERIENCES

There are plenty of alternatives to diving and snorkelling for those who want a glimpse of underwater life. Most hotels offer trips in glass-bottom boats, which sail over the reef. This is a good way for children to see and learn about marine life.

UNDERSEA WALKS Undersea walks involve plodding along the seabed wearing a lead belt, whilst air is pumped into your helmet from the boat above. It is advertised as being suitable for children over seven years of age. Sadly, this activity is damaging the marine environment and thousands of pairs of feet per year gradually destroy what lies beneath them. If you are still interested, walks usually last 20–25 minutes and cost around Rs1,000 per person. The main operator is Captain Nemo’s Undersea Walk (Coastal Rd, Grand Baie; % 263 7819; e captainnemo[at]intnet.mu).

SUBMERSIBLES Submersibles are another option suitable for children and adults alike (although not claustrophobics!).

A 15min boat trip takes you to the holding ship, from where you board the submarine for the 40min dive. The submarine can hold 10 people & reaches a depth of 35m. There you can see the coral reef, a shipwreck & tropical fish. The submarine departs every hour 08.30–16.30 in summer & 08.30–15.30 in winter. You need to allow about 2hrs for the whole experience, including time to complete the paperwork, etc. Adult/child Rs3,900/2,300. Reservation essential. You can book exclusive use of a 5-person submarine for a special meal or even a wedding (Rs25,000). Blue Safari Submarine also offers 30min rides on 2-seater, James Bond-style, submersible scooters. You can pilot the scooter yourself & it is simple to operate. The driver & passenger can talk to each other during the dive. You dive in a group of 5 scooters, accompanied by 2 divers for safety. You must be over 16 years of age to drive a scooter & over 12 years to be a passenger. As with the submarine, the experience takes around 2hrs, departing every hour 09.00–16.00 in summer & 09.00–1500 in winter. Double scooter Rs5,000 (2 people), Rs3,900 (1 person).
