Mauritius - Quatre Bornes

QUATRE BORNES The main road from Rose Hill (Royal Road) takes you to the St Jean’s Church roundabout, where you can either continue to Phoenix and Curepipe or turn right to Quatre Bornes. The town was so named as four former sugar estates (Bassin, La Louise, Palma and Beau Séjour) shared a common four-point boundary.

With a population of over 80,000, Quatre Bornes has developed on either side of the main road as the centre of five residential communities. The emergence of a large middle class in the area is apparent from the presence of modern shops, supermarkets and good-quality restaurants and snack bars.

The market is centrally located on St Jean Road, the main road through the town. The markets on Thursday and Sunday are reputed to be the island’s best for clothing, handicrafts and household items; on Wednesday and Saturday there are fruit and vegetable markets. There are plenty of discount clothing shops on the same road, especially in the Orchard Centre, which is just west of the market. The shopping centre is relatively modern and has a food court, where Wi-Fi is available. A little further on is the police station, near the Total petrol station.

Getting there and away The bus station is roughly in the middle of St Jean Road, near the junction with Victoria Avenue. There are regular buses to and from Port Louis via Rose Hill and Beau Bassin. Buses also depart from Quatre Bornes for Curepipe, Baie du Cap and Wolmar (via Flic en Flac).
