The education system in Mauritius is based on the British model and is free up to university level. Education is compulsory up to the age of 16. The country’s literacy rate is respectable, around 85%, and over 95% of all children attend school.

The education boom began in the 1960s, with the opening of scores of private colleges. Free education at secondary level was introduced in 1977 with an immediate doubling of the number of students enrolled, and with new schools being opened by the government.

The majority of schools are state run, but a significant number are controlled by the Roman Catholic Education Authority and the Hindu Education Authority.

Lessons are conducted mostly in English, whilst French is taught. The majority of papers for public examinations are marked in the UK.

The University of Mauritius at Le Réduit was opened in 1965, originally to train civil servants in preparation for independence. It now runs schools of administration, agriculture and technology. The Mauritius Institute of Education trains the country’s schoolteachers and is responsible for the national certificate of primary education. The Mahatma Gandhi Institute at Moka concentrates on African and Asian studies.

Many Mauritians strive to study at universities overseas, particularly in the UK, France and Australia.
