Mauritius - Ste Anne

About 5km south of St-Benoît on RN2 lies Ste-Anne, a pretty village that has proudly preserved many of its Creole houses.

Just off the main road is the village’s highly unusual church. The original building, dating from 1857, was rebuilt by Father Daubenberger and his parishioners from 1892. The result is an extravagant pastel pink building embellished with rather odd stone carvings. Near the church is a small shop called Ilôt Savons, which sells locally made soap.

Just north of Ste-Anne on the RN2 is La Grotte de Lourdes, a shrine to the Virgin Mary. It is said that in 1862 a tidal wave hit the area, but the locals hid in a cave and were saved. They built the shrine, which still attracts many pilgrims, as a symbol of their gratitude to the Virgin.
