Mauritius - Food

The staple diet of Mauritians is rice, which has to be imported. However, enough potatoes for local demand are now grown, in excess of 20,000 tons a year. Maize production is increasing, although a substantial proportion has to be imported.

Groundnuts, onions, garlic, manioc, various leaf vegetables and spices are grown locally, as well as the tiny, round Mauritian tomato known quaintly as pomme d’amour (love apple). The growing of pulses such as peas and beans is being encouraged.

Fruits abound, especially pineapples, which are offered, already peeled in spirals, for sale at every major street corner and bus station. Bananas, papayas and traditional tropical fruit such as mangoes, lychees, watermelons, coconuts and citrus thrive and are of commercial importance.

Coffee is grown only on a small scale because it is in flower during the risky cyclone season. It can be found in the Chamarel area of the south, growing in sheltered places by the ridges of the hillsides.

Enough poultry and eggs are produced for domestic needs. Cattle-rearing has been developed on some sugar estates as part of the diversification policy but meat is still imported. Goat meat is popular and is produced commercially. Pigs and sheep are also raised, but in smaller numbers than cattle or goats. Venison, too, is farm-reared.
