Textiles Textiles are now one of the largest industries in Mauritius. While most of the finished goods are exported to Europe, once the manufacturers have completed their quotas, the remainder can be sold at home, at very attractive prices.

The island has made a name for itself in the knitwear field and shops can be found all across Mauritius. In the Floréal Square, there are a number of shops that sell good-quality clothes at factory prices. Floréal Knitwear makes clothes for a number of well-known international brands but you can pick up the garments in Mauritius at a fraction of the price, often before the brand label has been sewn in. Harris Wilson, Maille Street, Café Coton, Equateur and Diesel are all decent brands made in Mauritius. Visitors to Mauritius used to flock to the innumerable ‘designer’ stores on the island believing that they were getting fabulous discounts on famous brands, Ralph Lauren in particular. It wasn’t until 2004 that it was confirmed that these shops stocked fake designer clothing made on the island and the government ordered them to be shut down. Canny shoppers will be quick to spot that fakes (often Dolce and Gabbana, Chanel, Armani, etc) are still sold in some shops.

If you want custom-made clothing, dressmakers and tailors can run up garments in a few days. Short-term visitors should commission the work on arrival to ensure that it is ready in time for departure.
