A package including flights and hotel accommodation is one of the most cost-efficient ways of visiting Mauritius as tour operators are able to negotiate special fares with airlines and hotels. Many offer visits to Mauritius in combination with another destination; particularly popular is a stay in Mauritius after a safari in Africa. Going on a package holiday need not restrict your freedom to explore the island.

From Europe It takes around 12 hours to fly to Mauritius direct from Europe. The fact that it is a long way and that there are no cheap charter flights has helped Mauritius preserve the qualities that make it attractive. It also makes getting there the biggest expense of a visit.

UK Air Mauritius and British Airways each offer several non-stop flights per week from London. It is also possible to fly via Paris with Air France, via Dubai with Emirates and via the Seychelles with Air Seychelles.

France Air Mauritius and Air France operate frequent codeshare flights from Paris Charles de Gaulle. Alternatively, you can fly via Réunion with Air France or Air Austral.

Germany Both Condor and Air Mauritius operate direct flights from Frankfurt and Munich.

Air Mauritius also offers direct flights from Milan and Geneva.

From Africa The closest mainland gateways are those in Africa. It takes around four hours to fly from Nairobi, Durban or Johannesburg to Mauritius and around five hours from Cape Town. From Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town there are flights by Air Mauritius and South African Airways. British Airways also flies from Cape Town to Mauritius via Johannesburg. Air Mauritius operates flights from Nairobi. Regular Air Mauritius and Air Madagascar flights link Madagascar and Mauritius; flight time to Antananarivo is just under two hours.

From other Indian Ocean islands Air Mauritius offers several flights a day between Réunion (Roland Garros and Pierrefonds) and Mauritius; flight time is around 45 minutes from Roland Garros and 55 minutes from Pierrefonds. Air Austral also operates regular flights on the Mauritius–Réunion route. Air Mauritius flies several times a day between Mauritius and Rodrigues (flight time around 1 hour 30 minutes).

From the US/Canada There are no direct flights between North America and Mauritius. The best option is usually to fly via London or Paris.

From Australia Air Mauritius operates flights from Perth and from Sydney via Melbourne. Approximate flight times to Mauritius are Perth 8 hours 30 minutes, Sydney 12 hours 50 minutes and Melbourne 11 hours 25 minutes.

From the Middle East Air Mauritius operates direct flights in a codeshare arrangement from Dubai with Emirates Airlines. Flight time is around 6 hours 30 minutes.

From Asia Air Mauritius operates flights from Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai. Flight times from Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai are around 6 hours, and from Delhi around 7 hours 30 minutes. Air Mauritius flies between Mauritius and Hong Kong (9 hours 45 minutes), and Shanghai via Kuala Lumpur (11 hours 20 minutes). Air Mauritius flights to/from Kuala Lumpur (7 hours) and Singapore (7 hours 10 minutes) are in a codeshare arrangement with Malaysian Airlines.

Whichever way you fly to Mauritius, it is absolutely essential that you have a confirmed return, or onward, ticket in your possession when you arrive. Passengers without a valid ticket to leave Mauritius aren’t welcome and won’t be allowed in until they buy one. There is more on the immigration requirements in Red tape, pages 45–8.
