Mauritius - Airport

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport he airport at Plaisance, in the southeast of the island, is small but modern with good facilities. At the time of writing, the construction of a new terminal building was under way adjacent to the current one.

There are a few duty-free shops both on arrival and on departure. In the departure area are a café and shops selling local goods, from handicrafts to smoked marlin, although these are more expensive than in many other outlets on the island. Money can be changed at the bank counters in the main hall, which are open during all international arrivals.

The public are not allowed to enter the check-in departure area and baggage security screening is done at the entrance to the building.

For more information about the airport, visit aml.mru.aero.

Luggage Delivery of luggage is usually prompt unless there are several aircraft arriving at the same time and there are usually plenty of trolleys available. If you use the services of the porters, who wait outside the arrivals lobby, you may want to give a small tip, say about Rs100.

Getting to your hotel If you have booked your holiday as part of a package, transfers to your hotel will probably be included. Even budget hotels booked independently can usually arrange transfers for a fee.

All the major car-hire companies have desks at the airport. If a friend is meeting you, they will have to wait outside since the general public are not allowed into the arrivals lobby and have to congregate with the taxi drivers, beyond the doors. Tour operators and hotel representatives wait inside the lobby.

If you need a taxi it helps to know the current fare to your destination and the tourist information counter at the airport should be able to tell you. At night you could well be charged double. It is best to agree the price before starting your journey.

During the day there are public bus services from the airport to Mahébourg and Curepipe, from where buses serve other parts of the island. The information counter can provide details on bus services from the airport.
