DISABLED TRAVELLERS

While most modern buildings in Mauritius conform to international standards for disabled access, there is no requirement for hotels to construct rooms equipped for the disabled. Even large modern hotels built in the last few years lack specially designed rooms.

However, most hotels claim that they can accommodate disabled guests by giving them a room on the ground floor. This is all very well but many hotels have numerous steps linking their facilities and lifts are not always on hand. Contact the hotel direct in order to gather as much information as possible.

Hotels which have rooms equipped for the disabled include Hilton Mauritius Resort and Spa, Le Preskil, Le Touessrok, One&Only Le St Géran, Sugar Beach Resort and the Indian Resort. Domaine les Pailles is one tourist attraction that has full wheelchair access and even holds conferences for the disabled.

Although pavements are present in large towns, such as Port Louis and Curepipe, they are often poorly maintained. The coastal resorts tend to be quite spread out and frequently lack pavements, making wheelchair access difficult. Public transport does not offer wheelchair access but local ground handlers, such as White Sand Tours, can assist by providing wheelchair-friendly transport.
