Mauritius - Packing

WHAT TO TAKE

The glib answer is plenty of money as there are endless opportunities to spend it in Mauritius. Credit cards are widely accepted and all the main towns have ATMs.

Apart from specific personal items like prescription medicines, you should be able to get everything you need but some items may be more expensive than in your home country. Suncream, insect repellent, camera equipment and other such essentials are very expensive locally.

For clothes, casual elegance is a good watchword. On the coast at any time of the year, you will need lightweight, preferably cotton clothing. Something warmer will be necessary in the evenings, particularly in the highlands. Most hotels require men to wear trousers and shirts in the restaurant in the evenings. If you plan to do some hiking, sturdy trainers are sufficient for the trails in Mauritius. Hotel boutiques and shops in Port Louis and Curepipe have a range of clothing appropriate for the climate.

Three-pin and continental two-pin sockets are both used, so take the appropriate adaptors if you need to. Modern buildings and hotels tend to have three-pin UK-style plugs, whilst budget hotels and self-catering accommodation often have two-pin plugs. Occasional power failures do occur so it is prudent to carry a pocket torch.

Finally, don’t forget adequate travel insurance.

MAPS There are several small maps of Mauritius and Rodrigues available as part of the tourist office literature, which will be sufficient for most visitors. Ground handlers can also provide good maps of the island. The Globetrotter travel map has useful detail and includes maps of Port Louis Curepipe, Grand Baie. For hikers, a map of the Black River Gorges National Park is available from the Forestry Department.
