Agalega is situated between the Seychelles and Mauritius, west of the Mascarene Ridge, about 1,206km north of Mauritius and 563km south of the Seychelles. There are actually two islands (North and South), separated by a sandbank which can be forded at low tide. Taken as one, the island is 24km long but not more than 3.25km wide.

The islands were named by the Portuguese after the nationality of their discoverer, Juan de Nova, who was a Spanish Galician serving the King of Portugal. At the time of the British takeover they were occupied by the captain of a French privateer, licensed by General Decaen to cultivate and harvest coconuts, using slaves from Madagascar.

There are nearly 300 people living on Agalega, which is administered by the Outer Islands Development Corporation as an island plantation producing coconut oil. It is almost entirely covered with coconut palms and some casuarinas. North Island has the main coconut mill on it; pear-shaped South Island is used as the administrative centre.The resident manager is responsible for a working population of 180 to 200, including administration staff, police, meteorologists, teachers, medical personnel and approximately 150 labourers. Wives and children make up the additional population.
