Cheap eateries abound: snack bars, samoussas sellers and even fast-food outlets. There are restaurants scattered throughout the Port Louis Waterfront area and a food court in the Caudan Waterfront with numerous outlets serving snacks, ice creams and fast food.

X Le Courtyard Cnr St Louis & Chevreau sts; % 210 0810; ( for lunch Mon–Sat, for dinner Thu/Fri. Cuisine: European. As the name suggests, tables are arranged in an attractive courtyard, providing a welcome retreat from the city streets. A sophisticated restaurant & very popular. Reservation recommended. $$$$

X Café du Vieux Conseil Old Council St; % 211 0393; ( for lunch Mon–Fri. Cuisine: French, Creole. In a quiet, restored cobbled lane, opposite the theatre. Al fresco dining & an almost Mediterranean atmosphere. Excellent food & service. The menu lists only a few dishes & is changed frequently, but there is sufficient variety, including vegetarian specialities & Australian beef. $$$

X Carri Poulé Duke of Edinburgh Av; % 212 4883; ( for lunch Mon–Sat, for dinner Fri/Sat. Cuisine: Indian, Creole. A sophisticated restaurant serving well-prepared Indian dishes with a Mauritian touch, not the stereotyped offerings of European ‘Indian’ restaurants. $$$

X Le Capitaine Caudan Waterfront; % 213 0038; ( for lunch & dinner daily. Cuisine: seafood, Creole, Indian. A good location by Port Louis’s standards, overlooking the harbour. Superb seafood & good service. Seafood platter for 2 from Rs3,000. $$$

X Namasté Caudan Waterfront; % 211 6710; ( for lunch & dinner Mon–Sat, for dinner Sun. Cuisine: north Indian. Fine cuisine in the historic setting of the old observatory building. The décor is fascinating, with the original walls of the observatory adding atmosphere. The food is authentic & delicious, carefully prepared with spices imported from India. Live Indian music on Fri, Sat & Sun evenings. Reservation recommended. $$$

X Beer & Spice Astrolabe Centre; % 208 0351; ( 09.00–01.00 daily. Cuisine: Italian, Creole. At the city end of the Astrolabe Centre. Informal dining on a terrace overlooking the harbour. Friendly service & excellent pizzas, plenty of options for vegetarians. The owner is happy to prepare dishes not on the menu for those with special dietary requirements. The large portions make this good value for Port Louis. $$

X Black Steer Grill House, Caudan Waterfront; % 211 9147; ( 12.00–23.30 Mon–Sat, 12.00–14.30 & 18.00–23.00 Sun. Happy hour 17.30–19.00. Cuisine: grills. A large, modern American-style steakhouse. Popular for its Sun lunch buffet. $$

X La Bonne Marmite 18 Sir William Newton St; % 212 2403; ( for lunch Mon–Fri. Cuisine: Creole, French, Indian, Chinese. A café, pub & restaurant in one. The café is on the ground floor behind which is the Rocking Boat Pub (see Nightlife & entertainment below). The restaurant is upstairs in a grand room with table d’hôte & à la carte menus. Reservation recommended. $$

X La Flore Mauricienne 10 Intendance St; % 212 2200; ( 08.30–17.00 Mon–Fri, 08.30–14.00 Sat. Cuisine: French, Creole. This well-known bar, café & restaurant first opened in 1848. There is a smart open-air terrace, a buffet restaurant & an elegant dining room. The accent is on European cuisine & clientele. French pastries are a speciality. Patronised by regulars, so some feel it has a cliquish atmosphere. $$

X Le Bistrot du Port Astrolabe Centre, Caudan Waterfront; % 210 6586; ( 08.30–late Mon–Sat. Cuisine: French, Creole. Casual dining on the waterfront; has an extensive menu. $$

X First Restaurant Cnr Royal & Corderie sts; % 212 0685; ( for lunch & dinner Tue–Sun. Cuisine: Chinese. Tasty, reasonably priced dishes in pleasant surroundings. Regarded as one of the best Chinese restaurants on the island; Sun lunch yum-cha is popular. Try the roast duck. $
