All towns of any size have a post office which is open 08.00–12.00 and 14.00–17.00 Monday to Friday, and until midday on Saturday. Poste restante is handled at the main post office in St-Denis, on the corner of Rues Juliette Dodu and Maréchal Leclerc. The postal codes for the main towns are as follows:

St-Denis                              97400                  St-Gilles-les-Bains              97434

St-Benoît                             97470                  St-Paul                                 97460

St-Philippe                          97442                  La-Plaine-des-Cafres           97418

St-Joseph                            97480                  La-Plaine-des-Palmistes     97431

St-Pierre                              97410                  Cilaos                                   97413

Le Tampon                          97430                  Salazie                                 97433

St-Leu                                  97436

Telecommunications are straightforward. To call Réunion from abroad, use the IDD code 262 followed by the local number minus the initial zero. All land line numbers begin with 0262 and mobile numbers begin 0692/3. There are public payphones and most take phonecards (télécartes), which are sold in post offices, newsagents and shops displaying the sign.

By far the cheapest way to make international calls is to buy an international phonecard, available at newsagents. You can make calls from any touchtone phone by first dialling a freephone number, then the code on the back of the card. If you own a mobile phone you should be able to use it in Réunion, via the local networks, SFR and Itinéris. You should confirm with your service provider before travelling that your phone will work. Parts of the interior have very patchy reception.

FAX There are plenty of offices offering fax services and hotels will usually send/receive them on your behalf for a fee.

INTERNET ACCESS/EMAIL Although increasingly used in homes, schools and businesses, public internet facilities are surprisingly rare. Wi-Fi access is gradually becoming available at hotels and in some public places, such as tourist offices, libraries and certain cafés. If you are resident on the island, your local médiathèque should provide free internet access but you’ll need to prove that you live in the surrounding area. Prices at internet cafés vary but you can expect to pay €7–12 per hour.

You will see throughout the island a number of Cyber Bases. These were created by local government to increase internet usage by Réunionnais. They offer computer and internet classes, and free internet access. However, the Cyber Bases encourage tourists not to use their facilities, but rather to go to an internet café, leaving the Cyber Bases facilities for locals.
