Réunion, together with Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guiana and Mayotte, is a French Département d’Outre-Mer (DOM), or overseas department. It is administered by a préfet (prefect), who is appointed by the French Government. The island elects five deputies to the National Assembly and three representatives to the Senate. General and Regional councils for Réunion are elected every six years.

As in Mauritius, the white and Indian communities are substantially better off than the Creole population, which causes underlying socio-economic tensions. The economic well-being of Réunion and containment of these tensions depends heavily on continued financial assistance from France. Although there are groups who would like to see independence for Réunion, the majority of the population is aware that this would mean forfeiting the significant financial benefits of their association with France, something which they are not prepared to do.
