Mauritius - Eating

There are small general shops in both Salazie and Hell-Bourg, where you can stock up on food for hiking. The supermarket in Hell-Bourg on the corner of Rues Général de Gaulle and Cayenne is probably your best bet.

X Relais des Cîmes 67 Rue Général de Gaulle, Hell-Bourg; % 0262 478158; ( for lunch & dinner daily. Cuisine: Creole, French. Arguably the island’s best Creole cuisine. This well-known restaurant was founded by Mamie Javel, author of a superb Creole cookbook titled La Réunion des Milles et Une Saveurs. In 2006, Mamie Javel, aged 85, finally retired to St-Denis, but her cuisine lives on at this restaurant. Meals are prepared using local products & according to Mamie Javel’s famous recipes. Copies of her Creole cookbook are on sale in the restaurant. The décor is unmistakably French, with red & white checked tablecloths & curtains. The cabri massalé (goat curry) & the poulet coco (coconut chicken) are superb. 3-course menus are good value at €16. $$$
