Opened in 2005, the hotel appears to have resolved the teething problems that plagued it at the start. Has pleasant views & the service is good. The large, en-suite rooms are modern & equipped with TV, phone & heating. $$

A Le Relais des Gouverneurs *** (5 rooms) 2 bis Rue Amiral Lacaze, Hell-Bourg; % 0262 477621; e calouboyer[at]wanadoo.fr. In a large colonial-style house. The rooms are simply but comfortably furnished & have en suite, TV & heating. $$

Opened in 2006 by one of the island’s leading mountain guides, Alice Deligey, this cosy hotel is sure to be a hit with visitors to the cirque. The hotel is perched above the main part of Hell-Bourg, with views of the cirque from the restaurant & the grounds. The charming en-suite rooms (with terrace & phone) are housed in 5 colourful chalets with a Creole flavour. Guests can use the mini spa (sauna, hammam, jacuzzi), which is welcome relief for tired hikers. The restaurant serves Creole food prepared with local ingredients. If you feel inspired, Creole cooking lessons are also available. Alice is very knowledgeable about Réunion & hiking, & she speaks good English. $$

A very popular hotel in the centre of Hell-Bourg, so book well in advance. The rooms are comfortable with en suite, TV, phone & heater; many have superb views. The new rooms are particularly appealing. The restaurant here is legendary (see below). $$
