Mauritius - Things To Do

Spa treatments Irénée Accot Thermal Centre (Route de Bras-Sec, Cilaos; % 0262 317227; f 0262 317657; e thermes-cilaos[at]cg974.fr; ( 08.00–12.00 & 14.00–18.00 Mon–Sat, 09.00–17.00 Sun & public holidays, closed Wed afternoon) Just above the town of Cilaos, the Irénée Accot Thermal Centre was opened in July 1988, its proprietors having capitalised on the combination of thermal springs and beautiful, tranquil surrounds.

Certain elements in the water, like sodium, magnesium and calcium, are apparently effective in the treatment of complications varying from rheumatism to digestive ailments.

A range of treatments is offered from spa baths (€5) and hammam (€15) to health packages lasting several days. A 30-minute massage is around €38. The combination options are good value and typically include two or more of the following: sauna, mineral spa bath, shiatsu, algae or Dead Sea salt treatment and electro-belt massage.

Hiking Needless to say, Cilaos has numerous possibilities for those into walking, hiking or lengthy treks. Even if you do only one of the short walks to nearby villages, you can still enjoy some breathtaking views. Two simple options which come to mind here are the roads to Bras Sec village and to the Roche Merveilleuse, a superb mountain viewpoint overlooking the whole cirque. You can also drive to the base of Roche Merveilleuse and a short climb up some steps takes you to the viewpoint. From the village you can walk to the impressive waterfall known as Cascade Bras Rouge (grading: moderate). It involves walking down a steep path and, of course, back up it and takes around 2½ hours.

For the adventurous, Cilaos is the starting point for the arduous two-day trek to Piton-des-Neiges

Mountain biking Cilaos is an excellent area for mountain biking. There are two particularly popular routes: the first starts in town, then crosses Plateau des Chênes and ends at Roche Merveilleuse (grading: moderate). The other starts in Bras Sec village, then takes you to Bras de Benjoin village and on to Cilaos. Run Evasion has mountain bikes and helmets for hire (for contact details, see Chapter 16, Activities, pages 272–3).

Other outdoor activities Cilaos is a popular area for numerous other activities, especially canyoning and river hiking. Run Evasion has an outlet in Cilaos, which sells outdoor equipment and can arrange activities. For details of activities and operators, see Chapter 16, Activities, page 269.
