As part of its campaign to promote Rodrigues as a destination to appeal to sensitive travellers, the MTPA has produced a glossy leaflet with a section on what to do and see. The list is short but pinpoints some of the charms of the island. The activities can be organised by a tour operator or hotel.

• Hiking/trekking/mountain biking

• Rod and line fishing or accompanying fishermen when they pick up lobsters, crab and octopus from the casiers left overnight in the lagoon

• Visit Caverne Patate (the cave) at Plaine Corail; guide essential

• Visit local people in their homes. It is possible to stay with them and sample home cuisine.

• Boat trip to Ile aux Cocos, a haven for seabirds

• Experience the séga-tambour, the island’s folkloric dance

• Enjoy Rodriguan fish and seafood in local restaurants

I would add to that list a visit to the François Leguat Giant Tortoise and Cave Reserve and a walk along the east coast between Graviers and St François stopping off at beautiful, isolated beaches such as Trou d’Argent
