Mauritius - Car Hire

Driving During the 1990s, roads were improved and many more vehicles imported, although there are still relatively few cars on the island. Regulations for drivers are as for Mauritius, except for the speed limit, which is 50km/h. Take care as there are many steep, windy, narrow roads which are not lit at night. 4x4 vehicles are common and are best suited to the conditions. There is no coastal road around the island; you have to keep climbing back up to the centre to get almost anywhere. There is only one petrol station on the island, in Port Mathurin, so keep an eye on the fuel gauge. Should you run out of fuel, most of the tiny village shops dotted around the island will sell you a couple of litres of petrol in a soft-drink bottle.

In addition to the inbound tour operators above, the following offer car hire:

1 Avis Sir Gaetan Duval Airport Plaine Corail; % 832 8100; f 832 8075; e avis[at]avismauritius.com; avismauritius.com

1 Chez M et Mme Poupon Pointe Monier; % 877 4292

Scooters, motorbikes and bicycles can also be hired. However, be wary – some people hire out these vehicles without having the necessary permits.

Taxis There is just a handful of taxis on the island and they do not drive around looking for clients. Your best chance of finding one is at the bus station in Port Mathurin. The tourist office can provide a list of taxi drivers and their contact details.

BY Bus The bus station is on the outskirts of Port Mathurin at the east end of Rue de la Solidarité. It’s on the seafront beyond the Winston Churchill Bridge. On one side are buildings housing snack bars and stalls selling an array of goods. The bus stops are on the other side, with the bus number and destination marked on each. The network is far-reaching as much of the population is without a car, but timetables are pretty ‘flexible’ and buses stop running at about 17.00. Travelling by bus is inexpensive: the maximum price for a ticket is usually around Rs30. Don’t forget to raise your hand or clap in order to stop the bus.

Hitchhiking Hitchhiking around Rodrigues is an absolute pleasure, because it’s the ‘done thing’ to pick up anyone thumbing for a lift. You should, however, exercise due caution when accepting a lift from a stranger.
