Mauritius - Eating

Rodriguan food tastes fresh and healthy, perhaps because many of the ingredients are organically grown on the island. The chickens you see wandering free-range all over the island could well end up on your plate, usually in the form of a cari poulet. The caris are similar to those eaten in Mauritius, and are typically made from octopus, chicken or pork. Rodrigues is well known for its octopus, which is usually hand-fished by ladies walking through the lagoon at low tide and left to dry by the sea.

Maize is a staple part of the islanders’ diet and is often eaten as maize soup. Other specialities include locally produced honey, kidney beans, sausages, chillies, papayas and limes.

If you choose to eat with a local family in one of the island’s table d’hôte  you may well find that the entire meal was prepared on a wood fire as this is how many Rodriguans cook.

As in Mauritius, rum is a popular drink, particularly after meals as a digestif.
