Mauritius - Festivals

One of the highlights of the Rodriguan calendar is Fish Day on 1 March, when celebrations throughout the island mark the first day of the dragnet fishing season. Banané, or New Year (from Bonne Année), is also a time for festivities, which typically last for a week. Families eat their fattened pigs and there is a drinking contest known as Le Roi boire.

On 12 October the island celebrates Autonomy Day, marking the day in 2002 when Rodrigues gained autonomy.

The recently created Corn Festival (April/May) acknowledges the important role of this crop in the island’s culture and cuisine.

The Kreol Festival at the beginning of December remembers the island’s history and showcases its culture. Music and dancing are, as usual, at the centre of the celebrations.

Accordion Day coincides with the Roman Catholic Assumption of the Virgin Mary on 15 August. The accordion has been central to the island’s musical tradition since the 19th century and musicians from around the island gather to show-off their skills.
