Mauritius - Health And Safety

There is no malaria on Rodrigues so you need not take prophylaxis. The advice on inoculations for Mauritius applies equally to Rodrigues.

Insect repellent is necessary as mosquitoes are abundant. Strong sunblock is essential. Water is drinkable in hotels but, as in Mauritius, can cause upsets. It is advisable to drink bottled water.

There is one hospital on the island, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (% 831 1628) at Crève Cœur on the outskirts of Port Mathurin. In emergencies they will send an ambulance. Medical care is also available at the Mont Lubin Clinic (% 831 4403) and La Ferme Clinic (% 831 7202). There is a pharmacy (% 831 2279; ( 07.30–16.30 Mon–Sat, 07.30–11.30 Sun) in Rue de la Solidarité, Port Mathurin.

A huge plus factor on Rodrigues is safety: crime, it would appear, is virtually absent. There are three prison cells, which are hardly ever occupied. Nevertheless, caution cannot be a bad thing, especially for women.

Take light, casual cotton clothing. Bathing costumes and T-shirts are acceptable everywhere. Remember beach shoes to protect your feet against sea urchin spines whilst swimming. Pack some long trousers or similar for the more upmarket hotels and restaurants in the evenings. Comfortable trainers with a sturdy grip are sufficient for the hiking trails.

Paul Draper of CARE-Co gave me a handy tip for travellers to Rodrigues: take a second form of photo identification, other than your passport. If you lose your passport on Rodrigues, you will need a new one before you can board a flight back to Mauritius. Unfortunately, there are no embassies or consular officers on Rodrigues and the honorary consuls cannot issue passports, you need to go to Mauritius for that and to go to Mauritius you need a passport. So, you could well end up stranded in Rodrigues while your home country’s authorities try to solve the conundrum.

MONEY AND BANKING

Hotels and most guesthouses and restaurants accept the major credit cards. Opening hours for banks are typically 09.15–15.15 Monday–Friday, and in some cases 09.15–11.15 Saturday.
