There are several possible trails into the interior, where gorges, hills and deep valleys beckon keen hikers. No special skills are required, as grading is mostly moderate or easy.

Some trails commence near the hotels, such as behind the Mourouk Ebony Hotel (Anse Mourouk). The hotels and tour operators will advise keen hikers on routes and can organise local guides.

A 5km trail starts at Anse Mourouk and runs uphill to Grande Montagne. First the trail leads to Montagne Chéri, a viewpoint over the vast lagoon to one side and the Mourouk Gorge on the other. Continue further uphill through a small village, with a few houses and herds of goats and cattle. The last part of the trail covers wooded terrain and ends at the broad, paved road leading to the Grande Montagne police station. The trail can be done in reverse for those who don’t want to walk continuously uphill. Public bus services are available at either end of the trail.

Mount Limon and Mount Malartic offer good opportunities for hiking, while the pristine beach of Trou d’Argent is a fairly easy 30-minute walk from the coastal village of St François. Other good walks include Port Mathurin to Grand Baie and on to Pointe Coton and Port Mathurin to Baie du Nord.
