Mauritius - Seabirds

The idyllic Ile aux Cocos is an island sanctuary and breeding ground for huge populations of seabirds. Common noddies (Anous stolidus) and lesser noddies (A. tenuirostris) are present in their thousands, nesting on casuarina (‘filao’) trees wherever space permits. The sooty tern (Sterna fuscata) and the graceful fairy tern (Gygis alba) are also present. Part of Ile aux Cocos is fenced off to protect the ground-nesting sites of bridled terns.

Nearby Ile aux Sables is a nature reserve and closed to the public. It is home to fairy terns, common noddies and lesser noddies. According to Ian Sinclair and Olivier Langrand, who co-authored the excellent field guide Birds of the Indian Ocean Islands, common tern (Sterna hirundo) and wedge-tailed shearwater (Puffinus pacificus) are also seen there.
