Rodrigues is not a souvenir hunter’s paradise. That said, there has been a recent growth in the handicraft industry, which today provides employment for some 700 Rodriguans. They’re involved in basketry, hat-making, textile-based crafts like embroidery, coconut crafts and jewellery. The Rodrigues branch of the national handicraft centre acts as co-ordinator and facilitates the development of the industry by hosting workshops, seminars and training sessions.

The hats you can buy in Rodrigues are made from fibre of vetyver, pandanus, coconut or latanier leaves. Basketry also utilises bamboo or sisal. Other items made from these materials include cradles, baskets, briefcases, tablemats, lampshades, letter holders and so on. In Port Mathurin, as well as the market, there are several roadside kiosks and curio shops which sell local handicrafts and food preserves, including hellishly hot chillies, mango and tamarind.

When doing your souvenir shopping, bear in mind that it is well worth supporting CARE-Co (see box CARE-Co, page 230).
