X Le St Aubin Rivière des Anguilles; % 625 1513; ( for 09.00–17.00 Mon–Sat. Cuisine: Creole, seafood. In the historic St Aubin planter’s mansion. The table d’hôte menu uses homegrown ingredients to create delicious local dishes, such as heart of palm salad, freshwater prawns with watercress, chicken with vanilla & pineapple mousse. A good selection of wines is available too. The Route du Thé includes lunch here (see What to see in Southern Mauritius, page 162). $$$$

X Le Batelage Village des Touristes, Coastal Rd, Souillac; % 625 6083; ( 12.00–17.00 & 18.00–21.30 daily. Cuisine: European, Creole, seafood. Very good food in an open-air restaurant overlooking the water. It turns into a piano bar on Fri evenings & features a séga show on Sat. Dinner on reservation only. $$$

X Le Bois Chéri Grand Bois; % 507 0216; ( for lunch daily. Cuisine: Creole, European. In a lovely setting within the Bois Chéri Tea Estate, on a hill with views to the coast. Serves excellent Creole dishes & some tea-flavoured specialities. Main courses from Rs345. You may be asked to pay a Rs100 entry fee to the grounds if you have not been for a tour of the tea factory. $$$

X Rochester Restaurant Coastal Rd, Souillac; % 625 4180; f 625 8429; ( 11.00–15.00 & 18.00–21.30, closed Tue dinner. Cuisine: Creole, Indian, European, seafood. The sort of restaurant every traveller hopes to find. In Dec 2004, Mr & Mrs Appadu converted the front room of their home into a tiny restaurant (6 tables), which has been so successful it has now expanded significantly. It is clean, nicely decorated, has a well-stocked bar & serves a wide range of delicious traditional food. The old stone building adds interest. $$$
