HIKING Experienced, fit hikers may want to tackle the route from St-Joseph to Piton-de-la-Fournaise. It’ll take two days, camping overnight or staying at the gîte in Roche Plate. From there, another day’s hiking (grading: difficult) eastwards will have you at the Plaine des Sables, then the volcano. Along the Rivière des Remparts route you can still see some of the original wilderness (lowland forests, secluded natural pools, heathland) which once dominated southeast Réunion.

From Entre-Deux you can walk to the top of Le Dimitile (grading: difficult). It is an arduous climb and you will need a full day, or you can stay overnight at one of the gîtes near the summit.

GOLF Golf Club de Bourbon (140 Les Sables, L’Etang-Salé; % 0262 263339; e info[at]golf-bourbon.com; golf-bourbon.com) is situated between St-Louis and L’Etang-Salé-les-Bains, easily reached from the RN1 using the Les Sables exit. Arguably the island’s best golf course. A well-maintained 18-hole course with fantastic tropical vegetation. The club covers 75ha and there is an attractive clubhouse, swimming pool and restaurant. HORSERIDING There are equestrian centres in Petit-Ile, Les Makes, and L’Etang-Salé. For details, see Chapter 16, Activities, page 273.

BULLOCK-CART RIDES are available with Charrette de Baster (54 Rue du Stade, Basse Terre; % 0693 047901; e charretteboeufreunion[at]yahoo.fr; charretteboeufreunion.com; adult/child €10/5) Bullock carts are rarely seen in Réunion these days but they were widely used until relatively recently. Guides take you on carts through the sugarcane fields and explain (in French) the old-fashioned method of harvesting and processing the cane. A traditional meal can also be arranged.

CINEMA The Rex on Rue Auguste Babet (% 0262 250101) is a fairly smart cinema, showing international films dubbed in French and occasionally shows foreign-language films (Spanish, Italian, etc). Eden is in Le Tampon, at 72 Rue Hubert Delisle (% 0262 571489) and in St-Joseph is the Cinéma Le Royal (8 Rue Amiral Lacaze; % 0262 565559).

THEATRE The Théâtre Luc Donat (20 Rue Victor le Vigoureux, Le Tampon; % 0262 272436; e direction[at]theatrelucdonat.re) puts on regular plays, dance shows, jazz concerts and classical music recitals. During the first two weeks of June it hosts an annual comedy festival. Sham’s Theatre (% 0692 704704) in the old sugar factory at Pierrefonds also puts on productions. Etang Salé also has a theatre (Place Fourcade; % 0262 265097).

THEME PARK AkOatys at the Floralys Caro Beach Hotel in Etang-Salé-les-Bains (2 Av de l’Océan; % 0262 914914; e contact[at]akoatys.com; akoatys.com; admission €9 for those under 1.4m tall, €13 for others) has a series of waterslides and a café.

SHOPPING The covered market (( 09.00–17.00 daily) is on Rue Victor le Vigoureux in St-Pierre and is ideal for souvenir shopping, as is St-Pierre’s busy Saturday-morning street market The markets in St-Louis are open daily.

CAHEB (83 Rue Kervéguen, Le Tampon; % 0262 270227; f 0262 273554; e caheb[at]geranium-bourbon.com; geranium-bourbon.com) sells essential oils and custom-made perfumes created from local geranium and vetyver.

The village of La Rivière St-Louis is known for its woodworking artisans. Their creations can be viewed and purchased at St-Louis Artisanat Bois (1 RN5 Bois de Nèfles Coco, La Rivière St-Louis; % 0262 261375).
