Scores of restaurants are crammed into St-Gilles-les-Bains and the surrounding area. In addition, you’ll see numerous snack bars and, for those who are self-catering, well-stocked supermarkets in the centre of town (Score, Champion). There is also a Score supermarket in L’Hermitage and a large Champion supermarket in La-Saline-les-Bains.

X DCP 2 Place Paul Julius Bénard, St-Gilles-les-Bains; % 0262 330296; dcp.re. Cuisine: European, seafood. It may look pretty casual but this place prides itself on preparing the freshest seafood caught in the waters around the island. $$$

X Hacienda Cocobeach Plage de L’Hermitage; % 0262 338143; ( from 09.00–late daily. Cuisine: Creole, European. Trendy restaurant/bar on the beach & the place to be seen. Tables are gathered in a garden & palms give it a tropical atmosphere. A lively & popular bar but you can have a quiet meal during the day; there are actually 2 restaurants within, 1 more upmarket than the other. $$$

X Le Toboggan Plage de L’Hermitage; % 0262 338494; ( for lunch daily, for dinner Thu–Sat. Cuisine: European, Creole, snacks, ice cream. Décor isn’t particularly smart but it’s right on the edge of the water & the food is very good. Holds jazz evenings fortnightly on a Sat. $$$

In a colourful Creole building in the centre of town, opposite Le Forum shopping centre. Excellent bakery which also serves a small range of meals (these vary – just look at the blackboard outside). Internet access available on site. Good value for money. $$
