Whether your visit is a last-minute deal or a long-awaited break, whether an adventure holiday, an exotic golf excursion or, indeed, your honeymoon - Barbados is an island full of fun and surprises.

The Barbadian national dish is Cou-Cou – a dish made with cornmeal and okras in much the same way as it has been prepared in Africa for centuries; it is served with flying fish in an aromatic tomato and herb sauce. Flying fish, by the way, abound in the island’s waters; they can jump out of the water and glide for up to 50 m.

Wooden dwellings known as chattel houses are peculiar to Barbados. A chattel is a man's moveable possession – so these are “moveable houses”, traditionally constructed on top of blocks, so the owner could literally take his house whenever he re-located. In time a distinct and increasingly ornate design evolved, making these houses uniquely attractive.

Some time during your stay you are more than likely to see a Barbados mongoose scurry across your path – considered a lucky event. These furry, stoat-like creatures were brought from India in 1879.
