The Amazon is the world’s second longest river and is located in South America. It runs through many different countries, including Brazil, Venezuela, Guyana, Colombia, Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador. 

The river mainly flows through rainforest, but it also passes some cities. Of these particular cities, Brazil’s Manaus is one of the most populated with 1.7 million people. There you will find a great urban vibe and a fantastic zoo.

However, you don’t need to venture out to the zoo to see an assortment of beautiful species. Amazonian river dolphins, electric fish, black caiman and the Amazonian manatee can all be found in the Amazon River. The anaconda snake can also be seen lurking in the shallower waters.

It is best to avoid the Amazon basin during the monsoon months, which are from January to June. The uncomfortable humidity isn’t pleasant, so it is a good idea to visit between July and December. The dry season is much better for sightseeing in the Amazon Valley.

From Manaus, there are tours where you can get out into the Amazon River by boating down the Rio Negro. Have a spot of lunch while aboard and there’s an option to take the canoes out afterwards.
