Chapada Diamantina, which translates roughly to Diamond Highlands, has everything from valleys and swamplands to rain forests and limestone caves. This national park is in the middle of Brazil’s Bahia state and is considered one of the best parks in Brazil. With tons of flora and wildlife, as well as natural pools and waterfalls, it’s easy to understand Chapada Diamantina’s popularity.

On your visit to Chapada Diamantina, you’ll notice a few towers and clumps of mineral-based structures in all different sizes. The landscape is the product of erosion during the early pre-Cambrian era. The rugged look and natural beauty is quite spectacular.

A must-see is the Cachoeira da Fumaça, which is Brazil’s highest waterfall. It is so tall that the water doesn’t even hit the ground below it. Instead, the water vaporises before the water has chance to make contact with the surface.

The main town is called Lençóis, which surrounds the park. It’s ideal to explore this quaint town before exploring the park. Most tours begin in Lençóis.

If you wish to avoid heavy crowds, the best time to visit Chapada Diamantina is either April to May or between August and October. December to March is a great time to view all the waterfalls, but you can expect a lot of rain! Whatever time of year you choose, you’re in for a treat!
