Within the Atlantic Rainforest lies the 1,200km Gold Trail. It was once used to transport gold and other valuable stones for shipment, which is where the name comes from. Nowadays, visitors can use the pathway for a relaxing stroll and take in the scenic views.

The natural rocks and waterfall make for a great view as you head down the steep valleys. Working up a sweat on this moderate hike is no problem at all. The Toboga Waterfall and Tarzan’s Pool are close and provide the perfect place to cool off. Take a dip until you’re ready to resume your walk.

Various full and half day guided hiking tours are available. Learn about the history of the Gold Trail and be shown around the rainforest. The trail was originally built in the 18^th century by African slaves, so there is plenty of historical perspective to digest. There are usually pit stops at the waterfalls for some swimming and photo taking. There is also the option to visit the cachaça distillery to watch how rum is made.
