The weather in Jamaica is, of course, tropical with hot and often humid conditions. The higher inland regions have a more temperate climate, while some regions on the south coast (such as the Liguanea Plain and the Pedro Plains) are relatively dry.
In winter, the average temperature is 750F; in summer, the average is about 800F, so a holiday in either season can be very pleasant, particularly for the vacationer used to cold rain under leaden skies for several months of the year. So, packing for these balmy temperatures, is easy – just remember a light jacket should you trek up to the mountains, where temperatures can be 10 degrees cooler, or perhaps you might take boat trip where the wind might well be strong. And air-conditioning, while a godsend, can sometimes create mini-polar zones.
Jamaica’s lush greenery tells its own story – at some point it is going to rain! The rainiest months are May and October, followed in wetness by June then September, but less so. In fact, the annual rainfall averages some 78 inches. Most rain falls in the mountains, while on the coast the showers are usually intense, brief and warm – and can be a welcome cool-off period.
The wind can be a factor – most welcome when it moves the humid air around, but with the potential to grow in intensity sufficient to affect scuba trips and snorkelling. And there is the possibility of a hurricane at certain times of the year – notably August and September. However, likelihood of a hurricane hitting landfall during your holiday is low enough that many resorts offer hurricane protection for your vacation as well as a “Jamaican Sunshine” guarantee – take note, Bognor Regisl!
