The reserve is home to abundant indigenous game, morning and evening game drives are offered and there is excellent bird watching. |
Battlefield Tours: iSibindi Zulu Lodge offers guided tours of the Anglo-Zulu battlefields. Tours must be pre-booked prior to your arrival so that arrangements can be made with our preferred guides to take the tours. The chilling accounts of the battles of Rorke's Drift and Isandlwana present a deeper insight of the rich history in the area. Presented alongside the military narrative, a complete picture of the impact of the Anglo-Zulu campaign on both the Zulu and British nations is formed. |
Zulu Culture and History: Isibindi Zulu Lodge offers the rare opportunity of learning about the Zulu culture and traditions as they remain in Zululand today. A Zulu Cultural Evening begins just as the sun starts setting, casting our hills in soft golden light. Guests are led down a narrow path to the beat of drums. As one emerges into a clearing coming across a historical Zulu umuzi (homestead) the dancing bodies of Zulu men and women make for a profound experience. The traditional dances and their role in Zulu history and culture is explained amid the energetic displays. A Zulu Homestead Visit gives guests a rare chance to experience the life of a rural Zulu family which has remained largely unchanged over the past hundred years since Shaka Zulu forged this mighty nation. |
Be sure to book your activities prior to your arrival as spaces are very limited!

Guests gather in the Central Lodge where they join in the camaraderie and share their happy experiences. Shayamoya offers a fully licensed bar to make your stay pleasantly bubbly. Refresh with a dip in the swimming pool or cool off under the shade of the gazebo. Tiger fishing is the lodge's speciality. The lake is the only water in South Africa that is home to the combative tiger fish but if fishing is not your bag, there are plenty of activities at Shayamoya, and some of the more unusual species of game to be discovered! |

Return to Mkuze Tented Lodge for dinner and overnight.
This morning you have a very early wake-up call, and following coffee and tea, depart on the early morning game drive. (Game drives are always conducted early in the morning and in the late afternoon / evening as this is when the best game viewing takes place – during the heat of the day the animals retire into the shade and are not often visible.) |
Return to Mkuze Tented Lodge for breakfast, after which you are at leisure to relax by the pool and enjoy the African bushveld for the day. Sometimes the game rangers take guests on safari walks, to learn more about the flora and fauna of the area.
Lunch follows, and a leisurely afternoon by the pool.
After High Tea, the evening game drive departs again, to try and track down those animals you have not yet managed to see. Being wild animals free to roam the reserve of the safari park, there is no guarantee what you’ll come across, and this is part of the whole exciting experience! |
Dinner and overnight at Mkuze Tented Lodge.
Today your safari experiences come to an end, as after breakfast you depart Mkuze Falls. More excitement and adventure awaits you though, as you’re now headed to the coast and the warm Indian Ocean town of Umhlanga Rocks! The drive will take you about five hours.
Umhlanga Rocks |
This seaside resort was originally part of the sugar estate of Sir Marshall Campbell, who introduced the colourful rickshaws to Durban’s beachfront. In 1931 Umhlanga Rocks became a village and additional cottages, hotels, guest houses and stores were built. The first beach cottage, the Oyster Box, was built in 1869 and became the present day Oyster Box Hotel. The tin roof of this cottage was used as a navigational beacon, until the automatic lighthouse was built in 1953. |
The Natal coast is Great White Shark territory and in the late 1950’s a number of serious shark attacks occurred, so in 1962 the first shark nets were erected. Now you can swim in safety and sunbathe on the glorious beaches. A visit to the multi-media centre of the Natal Sharks Board makes for a very interesting morning |
You're spending the next five nights at the very comfortable Zeranka Lodge, situated right on the beach! Your accommodation is on a bed and breakfast basis.

The Karkloof Canopy Tour is a unique eco-wilderness adventure taking place in the magnificent Karkloof indigenous forest of South Africa. The second of its kind in South Africa, the canopy tour involves traversing from one platform to another along a steel cable suspended up to 30 meters above the forest floor. The scenery and bird life is spectacular and professional guides provide interesting facts about the forest ecology during the three-hour tour. The tour begins with a detailed safety briefing followed by a 'kitting up' session where full body harness, pulleys and climbing equipment is put on and checked. A short drive into the Karkloof forest and it is time to monkey around! From the start on the launch platform a new world unfolds as one gently glides on a steel cable to the first tree platform. All groups are escorted through the forest canopy by a lead guide and a follow guide to ensure your safety as you slide from tree to tree. The platforms provide an unbelievable view of this enchanting new world - any fear of heights is soon lost as you gather in your new surroundings... |

Spend a couple of minutes relaxing while your guides enthusiastically explain the ecology of the forest. The Karkloof Canopy Tour consists of eight platforms and nine 'fufi' slides, the longest of which is over 170m! The accommodation suggested above is in each case at excellent, small establishments. In most cases I have used highly recommended Guest Houses, Lodges and Inns instead of larger hotels. Whilst the costs are similar to comparatively graded hotels, the atmosphere and attention to detail cannot be compared, and we think our clients will enjoy the more personal experience they offer. Each of the establishments in this itinerary is very different, but in its own way, each of them is very special and excellent value for money!
