Thailand Travel Information
The map of Thailand bears a resemblance in shape to that of an elephant with a long trunk stretching down the peninsular. Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand – which means “land of the free” – is a fascinating country for any person who enjoys experiencing the culture of a historic forgein country.
The map reveals Thailand to be a country roughly the size of France, sharing a border with Burma in the north and west, Laos in the north and north east, Cambodia and the Gulf of Thailand in the east and Malaysia in the south. The famous Mekong river - the longest in South-East Asia – forms the border between Thailand and Laos.
The country has a rich and colourful culture, with many exotic, interesting monuments dating back centuries. In recent decades, Thailand has successfully transformed itself from primarily a backpacker destination into one of the world’s top tourist destinations, catering for all tastes and budgets. When travelling on holiday abroad this destination should at the top of the list!
A holiday abroad in Thailand can combine the excitement of exploring the Golden Triangle’s temples and remote hill tribes (map in hand!) north of the second city, Chang Mai, with the beaches of Pattaya – or perhaps those of the islands. And, of course, some sightseeing in the dynamic capital, Bangkok, with its futuristic architecture set against the ancient, exquisitely crafted Grand Palace.
