St Lucia Food

St Lucia Food

St Lucia is an amazing island, full of natural beauty spots and an idyllic retreat for the discerning traveller. It is a beautiful volcanic island with lush rainforests, undulating agricultural land and unspoilt beaches. St Lucia is also one of the world’s breeziest places, where the trade winds blow in from the sea to the southern shore.

Discovered in 1502 by Christopher Columbus, St Lucia was a prized possession for over three centuries - the island changed hands 14 times between Britain and France before settling down as a British colony prior to independence in 1979. The French influence lives on in the patois spoken throughout the island.

Dense jungle and a central ridge of forested mountains dominate this small island of only 238 square miles. Two towering volcanic lava cones on the southwest coast - Gros Piton and Petit Piton - are regarded as one of the Caribbean's most famous landmarks and remain navigational aides for mariners to this day.

Mango-shaped St Lucia’s role as a holiday destination, along with a burgeoning financial services sector, is firmly underpinned by a government policy aimed at diversifying away from traditional banana exports and now defunct sugar cane production. The capital city, Castries, the surrounding resorts, the coastal village of Soufriere and several nearby nature attractions are the initial attractions for visitors, but there is dramatic mountain scenery, the Qualibou Volcano and its boiling sulphur springs, paths and roads lined with orchids and exotic plants, one of the few remaining tropical rainforests of the region, plus a host of fabulous beaches.

Waterfalls, mineral baths, fishing villages and white sandy beaches…St Lucia is a pint-sized paradise - just 27 miles wide and 14 miles across – whose combination of French-Creole hospitality and British heritage ensures a warm welcome for the visitor.
