Tobago hosts the Caribbean’s newest music festival that is already becoming one of the most anticipated musical events in the region: the Plymouth Jazz Festival. For three days in April, this year’s bash - held in the picturesque fishing village of Plymouth - might have stretched the “jazz” label to the limit but brought the house down for the third successive year.

Headliner for the 2007 event Sir Elton John - despite the misgivings of the Archdeacon of Trindad & Tobago – joined Al Green, the evergreen Earth, Wind & Fire and Gladys Knight in a star-studded line-up of performers plus the cream of local talent. Word is that Elton gave a stellar two-hour show that had the Plymouth crowd swaying and singing along with a string of his hits, to be followed by a huge firework display.

Over the two years of the festival’s existence it has become synonymous with many big name artists, starting in 2005 with none other than the legendary Stevie Wonder and including Natalie Cole, Baby Face, the O jays, India Arie, Shaggy, Patti LaBelle and Sting.

Tobago’s very own jazz festival is notable for its relaxed atmosphere. The audience can delight in a wide range of foods, local art and craft and theatrics and the off-chance of mingling with high profile celebrities spotted at the event – the likes of P Diddy, Chris Tucker and Richard Branson.
