Set in the Andaman Sea, the Phi Phi are among 130 islands included in Krabi province. While the mainland is forested with rubber trees, palms, mangoes and coffee plantations, Koh Phi Phi has grown rapidly from a backpacker’s idyll to an international resort area, complete with dive schools, five-star hotels and a lively bar and restaurant scene.

What began as a small fishing and farming community became a word-of-mouth hedonist retreat before Koh Phi Phi hit the headlines when the The Beach was filmed on the islands (in Maya Bay on Ko Phi Phi Leh) in 1999. This increased Phi Phi's popularity, drawing in a new crowd of day trippers from Phuket, curious to snap the spots where the film's star, Leonardo Dicaprio, played his part.
