Holidays to Koh Samui
Along a one-way beach road at Chaweng, set back about 100 m from the sand, is a bustling international tourist town packed with every kind of resort, restaurant and bar, from busy traditional family-run open air sea food and noodle Thai at Ninja to exclusive Thai-Californian fusion food at Jeff Lord's Betelnut and the inevitable Irish Pubs and American Fast Food places – yes, even McDonald's and Starbucks. There are fine art shops, tailors, and souvenir outlets, markets and a fair selection of wild or chilled out nightclubs to suit most tastes.
Night time turns busy on the beach road, with a crazy and colourful mix of pedestrians, motorcycles and ”Song Taos” – the small truck-taxis carrying people up and down the village. Chaweng is pretty much forever lively, with people exploring the shops (which also stay open late) or dancing the night away. There is plenty of nightlife, such as the Soi Green Mango, in a bright club and bar scene that only begins to abate after two in the morning.
Chaweng is popular for good reason – the beach and sea are lovely, with shallow waters for many yards out. In the summer months, though, the waters occasionally have some wind swell and surf with strong rip tides or side shore currents. On such days, inexperienced swimmers should stay close to shore or swim with other people.
