Langkawi Beaches and more

Langkawi Beaches and more

Set in the Andaman Sea, some 30 km off the north west coast of Malaysia, Langkawi Island is the largest and most developed in the Langkawi group of islands. It is one of the most beautiful and magical tropical destinations in Southeast Asia, with perfect beaches fringed with palm trees, azure seas and an equable, warm climate.

If you would like to a holiday to Langkawi then one of our Malaysia experts will be delighted to help. Just fill in your enquiry on the right hand side of the page.

Landkawi is accessible by boat from Kuala Perlis and Kuala Kedah or the daily flights from Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Singapore and elsewhere. It is also a 45-minute boat ride away from Satun, Thailand.

Amid what is undeniably natural splendour, the commercial world intruded in 1987 when the island – previously reliant on fishing and farming for its livelihood – was awarded Duty Free status. Now tourism is the island’s largest industry as a family-friendly tropical holiday destination, a “get away from it all” beauty spot and now, in certain parts of the island, all kinds of “shop till you drop” possibilities.

However scenic beauty of Langkawi remains its main attraction – the beaches, waterfalls and virgin rainforest, coupled with picturesque fishing villages and rolling rice fields – all conducive to rest and relaxation.

Most of Langkawi’s resorts are found in Pantai Cenang, near the airport and 25 km from the shopping epicentre that is Kuah Town. Its 2 km beach, plus another 1 km of Pantai Tengah is a beautiful sandy heaven for anyone seeking a gala-time nightlife and simply crashing out during the day.

Pantai Cenang is Langkawi's most popular tourist destination, located near the airport and 25 km away from Kuah Town. The hallmark of this beach is its 3 km stretch (when combined with the 1 km-long Pantai Tengah) of sandy goodness, beautiful scenery and exciting tourist attractions. This is also where most of the resorts are concentrated on the island along with a host of shopping opportunities, exciting nightlife and convenient facilities.

The entire beach road is lined with shops and stalls on both sides, selling mostly souvenirs in the form of fashion accessories, beads, handicrafts and merchandise, plus convenience stores. There is a night market in nearby Temoyong on Thursdays or, for the committed shopper, the Zon Duty-Free Shopping Complex in Underwater World.

For as far as the eye can see, the beach-side road of Pantai Cenang is alive with bistros, pubs, cafes, al-fresco restaurants and the ubiquitous souvenir shops. Some of the bars are directly located on the beach, combining an evening with friends over a beer, the sound of waves crashing on the shore and a star-filled sky overhead. The choice of cuisine is boggling, from Japanese, Thai, Korean and Western to local favourites, served mostly open-air restaurants by the beach.
