Situated 280km south of Aswan on the edge of Lake Nasser, the two temples of Abu Simbel are the most magnificent temples in the world. The large and so-called “sun temple” was built by the mighty Pharaoh Ramses II, the other for his Chief Wife Nefertari.

Four huge seated statues of Ramesses II dominate the massive facade. The statue is about 100 ft. in height and 115 ft. in width. The height of a seated colossus is about 65 ft.

The family members Ramesses are around his legs including his mother, his wife Nefertari and his son, prince Amenherkhepshef. On the chest and arms of Ramesses a royal cartouche bears his name.

The temple itself has four separate sections, the central hall, the second hall, the sanctuary and the storeroom. The ‘central hall’ has many pictures of the never-modest Ramesses. The ‘second hall’ is more dedicated to his family showing reliefs with his wife. The ‘sanctuary’ shows statues of Ptah, Re-Harakhty, Amun-Re. In this room the sun’s rays a line twice every year (ascension to the throne 21 February) and on his birthday (21 October) to illuminate the room magnificently. The storeroom was widely considered as his ‘treasure room’.

The temple was relocated at the time of flooding in Nile Valley when the Aswan High Dam was built in the 1960’s. Regular tours run to the temple throughout the day.
