Lençois Maranhenses National Park can be found on the north Atlantic coast in Brazil. It’s hard to decide which is more impressive – the immaculate white sand dunes or the rainwater lagoons amongst the desert landscape. Visiting the park is a surreal experience.

The two largest and most popular lagoons are Lagoa Bonita and Lagoa Azul. You can also find mangrove swamps as you explore Lençois Maranhenses. The Preguiças River is also a notable feature of the park and it contributes to the diversity.

The sand dunes cover a massive 383,000 acres. The ripples appear to go on forever. Not only can you admire the vast desert landscape, but you can ride the sand dunes in a jeep. There are tours where an experienced guide takes you around the park and stops off at all the natural water spots.

There are river boat rides available, as well as the option to take a 30-minute flight over the park. Quad biking and tubing activities are also available, proving there is plenty to do when visiting this sandy environment.

The best time to visit this park is between May and September. During this time the weather is nice and you’ll see the lagoons in their fullest state.
