1000 Islands - North America

When most people hear the phrase “Thousand Islands” they immediately think of the popular salad dressing, very few know of the dramatically beautiful group of islands.

The 1000 Islands are made up of more than 1846 small isles situated within the St. Lawrence River, North America. Stretching over a distance of 80 miles, between the Prince Edward Peninsula and Ontario, Canada. Most of the 1000 Islands lie within the Canadian region, however those isles on the east-side sit within New York, USA.

The size of the islands range from a huge 80 square kilometres, the largest being Wolfe Island, to the size of nothing more than just a few steps long. The 1000 Islands are named as being one of the most scenic spots in Ontario and northern New York.

Some of the 1000 islands are now privately owned by the wealthy and a certain section has gained the nickname “Millionaire's Row”. The lavish homes custom built upon these islands can be marvelled by taking an unforgettable river cruise.

Aboard the water, the St. Lawrence River host some breath-taking landscapes, and a fantastic way to experience the unique beauty. To gain perspective of the regions true beauty and vastness, take on a once-in-a-lifetime helicopter tour to reveal the river’s immensity and a birds-eye view of the 1846 islands. Watch the international boundary between Canada and USA zig zag below you, with the New York State on one side and Ontario on the other. After the 1812 War, the islands were divided fairly between the two regions, no island was allowed to be split by the border, hence the zig-zag style boarder.

Did you know: An island is defined as anything siting permanently above water and that can support at least one tree.
