The historic and beautifully scenic St. Lawrence River flows 743 miles across North America, from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. Famous as being one of the world’s longest rivers. The mighty river is still fairly young, having only formed some 10,000 years ago when the immense glaciers began thawing, exposing a giant notch in the Earth’s crust.

If you visit Québec, Canada (Montreal, Quebec City, Saguenay, or Gaspe); South-Eastern Ontario, Canada (Kingston or Thousand Islands); or North-Eastern New York, USA; you will encounter the majestic waterway.

The St. Lawrence River can be divided into three sections. Situated upstream lies the Great Lakes region; a beautiful network of broad lakes all interconnected by an intricate system of narrow river-like flows. The centre section of the St. Lawrence River is home to a normal watercourse you would expect to see from many other river flows, yet holding breath-taking views and wildlife along its banks. The latter section, from the Île d’Orléans to the Cabot Strait, between Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, sits the St. Lawrence estuary and the oval-shaped marine region known as the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The shorelines of the St. Lawrence River host some breath-taking landscapes.
