Located in the highland of Ecuador, is Cajas National Park. If you are interested in leaving the city to get close to nature and explore wondrous rugged landscape, this national park is the ideal location.

Only taking an hour by bus from the city, you can visit the park as a day trip or take some extra time out and make the best of it with a few nights stay. Entering the national park, you may feel as though you are in the Scottish highlands rather than Ecuador, due to the luscious green rolling hills and jagged mountains.

During a visit to the national park, tourists increase their chances of seeing llamas, bears, pumas and the wonderful Andean condors. The llamas were reintroduced to the park in 1990 but since then are thriving and love the terrain.

Despite the huge amounts of snow and ice, the vegetation still flourishes, clinging to life in these challenging conditions.

There is a vast number of interesting triails around the park, weaving around many of the 200 lakes. The choices of trails begin at short one hour treks and expand to two-day hikes. During you hike you are likely to encounter many locals, as this is a popular retreats for them due to the excellent trout fishing, which you can also have a try at.
