Travel insurance is always advisable for an overseas trip – including East Africa. A modern safari is a safe combination of excitement and relaxation, but there is always an element of personal risk in any expedition. There are bound to be hazards where you are travelling off the beaten track, getting about in 4 x 4 vehicles on dirt tracks or potholed roads and so on – you accept an element of risk, just as you do crossing a road or driving a car. So it makes sense take out an Insurance policy covering personal accidents and medical expenses.
Even the remotest camps are reasonably well geared to handle minor mishaps needing a first-aid practitioners, in the form of staff/guides with basic medical training and trauma kits. In the event of a really serious accident, the best option for immediate high care evacuation in Southern Africa is Johannesburg in South Africa. Ensure that you have adequate medical insurance: as a rule the remoter and less developed the destination, the more expensive the evacuation.
Ensure that your insurance coverage is valid in the event of sickness or injury abroad.
Some insurance companies specialise in overseas travel insurance and offer short-term cover, ideal for the length of a safari.
