Malaria-free Game Reserves

Malaria-free safaris are not a myth and if you want to see the ‘Big Five’ with the best possible safety, then our guide will give you expert advice on finding the perfect safari for you.

There are several ecologically diverse areas of South Africa that make up the perfect location for Malaria-free game reserves.

Many people choose the Malaria-free game reserves because they are traveling with children, elderly or unable to take medication. Malaria does carry a stigma that can put people off travelling to Africa, but be assured now you can enjoy all the wonders of an African safari without the need to run a million miles if you see a mosquito.

The majority of the Malaria-free reserves are in South Africa and they still offer amazing safari experiences. Whilst some of the more world renowned game parks are not Malaria-free (like Kruger National Park and KwaZulu-Natal regions) many private reserves have now been set up in Eastern Cape.

Areas like Waterberg, Pilanesberg and Madwikwe offer an enchanting experience due to the successful relocation of animals to these game reserves.

Popular Malaria Free Game Reserves

The Eastern Cape region is very popular since you can combine a safari with a visit to Cape Town. Some of the best Game Parks in this region are along the Garden Route and include:

Kwandwe Game Reserve – Located near Grahamstown, this is a large private reserve with day and night drives available. Also at the reserve you can enjoy bush walks, canoeing and fishing. Children over 6 are very welcome here.

Addo Elephant National Park – This is the largest national park in South Africa and the largest park for elephants. You’ll find all of the big five here but it’s also been to known to throw up viewings of whales and great white sharks too. Situated just north of Port Elizabeth, Addo is full of luxury accommodation making a stay here an excellent choice. No Children under 6 are allowed at the park.

Shamwari Game Reserve – Found along the Bushmans River, this is a family owned game reserve with Big Five viewing opportunities. Lots of luxury lodges and spa treatments are also available here.

Amakhala Game Reserve – Formerly owned by farmers, this family-owned game reserve is home to the all the popular African safari animals plus numerous amounts of Antelope. A selection of nice lodges are available for those on a mid-range budget.

Kariega Game Reserve – Right next to the Kariega River this stunning reserve offers canoeing safaris, fishing, river cruises and lots more beside the traditional game drives. You get all the wildlife you’d want on this safari, with luxury lodges, outdoor pools and decks to enjoy a cocktail or two on.
