Hotel Review - Ana Mandara Hue Vietnam

Yvonne visited Vietnam in July 2012

We stayed here at the beginning of July after our stay at the Fusion Maia Danang, the transfer was done as part of a half day excursion which took us to Marble Mountain in Danang then onto China Beach (where the American TV series of the same name was based around at the end of the 80’s), it is a beautiful beach.

We then went over the 21 km Hai Van Pass made famous by ‘Top Gear’ and was the only route connecting North and South Vietnam until the tunnel was built and finished in 2005, now you can go through the tunnel in 10 minutes but miss the great sights from the 90 minute journey up and down the pass.

The Ana Mandara is such a lovely hotel it’s a real shame that most visitors only stay for 1 or 2 nights while on a tour but the GM has said that they are starting to see longer stays now becoming more of a regular thing.

This is the only beach hotel in Hue (actually about 15–20 minutes from the centre) but they do run a shuttle bus several times a day, the beach here is fine sand and plenty wide enough for sunbeds.

As this is a hotel used mainly by those on tours the pool and beach areas were never crowded, if anything did spoil it slightly it would be the amount of ‘locals’ who let their kids run riot (having said that we were there during the main school holiday which is the month of July).

All of the rooms here face the sea but have varying views through the gardens or some are right on the sea front, they have Deluxe Rooms, Duplex Suites Beach Villas and 4 fabulous Private Pool Villas (guess which we had)!!!

There are 2 restaurants serving traditional Vietnamese food and a choice of Western/Asian dishes as well as lots of other dining experiences, you can shop and cook with the chef or just spend an afternoon sampling wine and cooking your favourite menu, there is private dining and beach dining.

Prices here were a lot cheaper than at the Fusion Maia but if I am totally honest the food wasn’t quite up to the same standard.. We were only paying between £8 – £15.00 each for a meal and a beer was £1.50 each, they had happy hour from 4pm- 6pm at the pool bar where all drinks were half price (that’s when we went for the cocktails).

Overall this is a lovely hotel for someone who wants to mix a little sightseeing in Hue, the Demilitarized Zone with some relaxation. There are plenty of local fishermen to watch going about their daily routine and there are even some real ‘local’ shacks serving seafood on the beach.

The weather here is similar to Nha Trang, Danang and Hoi An getting up to 40 degrees most days, this is quite normal in the Central region of Vietnam where the weather is good from May through to early/mid-September then it gets cool and very wet from November through to March.
